Awards

Friends of the Department Award

Objective

In an effort to acknowledge contributions to the PES department from outside supporters, this proposal wishes to initiate an annual award. Outside supporters could include: financial supporters, consultants to PES, legislators, administrators, collaborators, associations, businesses, endowments or any other entities or individuals deemed appropriate by the committee.

Process

A formal request via email by the PES Awards Committee Chair shall be sent to PES faculty, staff and students by the end of spring semester of each year. In this nomination application, the Awards Committee Chair shall request a letter of nomination and documentation of contribution to PES. Contributions could include, but are not limited to: large gifts, sustained volunteer support, substantial political support, leadership in large projects, leadership in multiple research projects, and any other contribution deemed appropriate by PES Awards Committee. These applications must be received by the Awards Committee Chair within 60 days of request. The Awards Committee shall consider all complete applications and all contributions to PES for each nominee. However, special consideration shall be made for sustained contributions and those contributions made within the previous calendar year. A simple majority vote of the PES Awards Committee determines award recipient. Ties shall be broken by the Awards Committee Chair. The committee may choose to not recognize any nominees. The PES Awards Committee shall define the appropriate "token of appreciation" to be given to each individual or entity. Ideas could include, but are not limited to: name on "Hall of Fame" plaque in Skeen Hall rotunda, commemorative plaque, lunch or dinner with Department Head and nominator. NMSU homecoming and other events in which student award recipients are acknowledged by PES should both include and highlight Friends of the Department Award recipients. The PES Awards Committee shall develop and maintain a departmental listing of all "Friends of the Department" recipients. Nominators of the award recipient are further charged with leading publicity and award notice. Possible publicity avenues shall include PES newsletter, trade journals, professional society newsletters, newspaper, University Communication and other avenues deemed appropriate by PES Awards Committee.
